Director, Student Programs
Kawamoto manages all student programs, including the sanofi-aventis International BioGENEius Challenge, the premier biotechnology research competition for high school students, and the Eli Lilly BioDreaming Poster Competition, a national poster competition for K-12 students. She also manages BioNOW (Biotechnology Network of Women), the Institute's leadership training program for women biotechnology professionals.
Kawamoto was previously Manager, Education Programs, at MdBio, a nonprofit organization focused on advancing bioscience in Maryland, where she managed a number of programs, including MdBioLab, a mobile science laboratory, and a new bioscience career video as well as partnerships such as UMBI’s Maryland Loaner Lab and the distribution of Your World to all middle and high schools in Maryland.
Kawamoto began her career in biotechnology as a Research Associate in both academia, at the University of Colorado and University of Washington, and industry at a start up company, Regulome. At Regulome, Kawamoto managed the company’s the cell culture facility as part of ENCODE (Encyclopedia of DNA Elements), a $5.3M project funded by the NIH and the contract sequencing services operation.
Kawamoto is a graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she studied biochemistry and chemistry. She serves on the Maryland Governor’s Workforce Investment Board for Biotechnology and is an active member of Women in Bio.
