
Minority fellows program

The 2008 class of Fellows
The yearlong Minority Fellows
Program pairs graduate
students, post-doctoral researchers and faculty from underserved
populations at colleges and universities with
industry Mentors.
All applicants must be graduate students through early career scientist status.
Fellows are introduced to the biotechnology industry during the Biotechnology Institute's Conference on Biotechnology Education, where
Mentors and Fellows attend sessions on new
and emerging technologies, mentoring, scientific
content updates, and field visits to local
industry and research facilities. All Fellows
attend the subsequent BIO International Convention.
The program continues with a year of mentoring.

- Build a lasting relationship with an industry mentor
- Discover new areas in which to apply an advanced science degree
- Network and make valuable business connections and develop relationships with other Fellows and Mentors
- Narrow down career foci and establish goals
- Develop job search skills such as how to enhance a vita, refine interpersonal skills and conduct informational and job interviews.
Recipients of these fellowships receive:
- One-year of mentoring from a biotechnology industry mentor
- Admission to the two-day Fellows Training Program
- Full convention access to the Biotechnology Industry Organization International Convention
- Field trips to local biotechnology companies
- Five nights lodging, local transportation and meals
- Round-trip travel
- Admission to the Biotechnology Education Banquet
- One year of individual membership to the Biotechnology Institute.
Under the direction of the Biotechnology Institute, each Fellow is matched with an industry mentor and given the opportunity to develop a relationship over the course of a year. Companies that have provided mentors are Amgen, Alpha-Genics, Inc., Biodimenions, Digene, Endogeny BIO, Exelixis, Genentech, Idenix Pharmaceuticals, Inc., IP Gene, and Syngenta Seed.
